Xinhua News Agency, Geneva, December 16 (Reporter Zeng Yan) On the 15th, Director-General of the World Health Organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reiterated his call for an immediate ceasefire between Palestine and Israel in the Gaza Strip at the annual press conference held by the United Nations Correspondents’ Association in Geneva.

Tedros said that a special meeting of the WHO Executive Board on the health situation in the occupied Palestinian territories had recently passed a resolution calling for the immediate, continuous and unhindered delivery of humanitarian relief supplies and the dispatch of medical workers to Gaza. The resolution also calls on the Director General to continue reporting on the impact of the current Palestinian-Israeli conflict on public health and mental health.

He said that these tasks are almost impossible to carry out under the current circumstances and that no one, including humanitarian and medical workers, is safe in the Gaza Strip. “The only solution is an immediate ceasefire.”

Tedros said more than 1,200 attacks on medical workers, patients, hospitals, clinics and ambulances had been recorded globally this year, resulting in nearly 700 deaths and more than 1,100 injuries.

Tedros also expressed great regret at the recent failure of the UN Security Council to pass a draft resolution on a ceasefire between Palestine and Israel. “There is no peace without a ceasefire, and there is no health without peace,” he said.
