WHO: Omicron mutation could lead to a surge in confirmed cases… The risk is very high.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the global risk of COVID-19 is very high, saying that the micron mutation of COVID-19 could cause a surge in the number of confirmed cases.

WHO made this statement in a document titled ‘Strengthening preparation for Omicron: Technical reporting and priority actions for member countries’ released on the 29th (local time).

“Given the mutations that may confer advantages in terms of immunity to evasion and contagiousness, the global spread of Omicron is more likely,” the WHO said.

He also analyzed that “according to these characteristics, COVID-19 (confirmed cases) may surge in the future and have serious consequences depending on various factors, such as where the surge occurs.” The overall global risk associated with it is assessed to be very high.”

Omicron mutations were first discovered in South Africa. In Omicron, 32 genetic mutations were found in the protuberant spike protein used by the Corona 19 virus to penetrate the human body.

There are twice as many spike protein mutations as the delta mutations, previously considered the most potent. Therefore, there is a high concern that Omicron has a much stronger transmission power and incapacitates vaccines and therapeutics.

Beyond South Africa, confirmed cases of Omicron mutation were found in more than 10 countries, including the UK, Germany, Canada, Hong Kong, and Israel.
