Apple is positioning itself to dominate AI deployment by integrating on-device agentic models and private cloud infrastructure into its hardware ecosystem. According to Computerworld, the company aims to shift AI workloads from centralized cloud servers to local devices, potentially eroding the market share of frontier AI services like OpenAI and Claude.

The strategy relies on a multi-tiered approach to processing. Apple uses on-device models for simple tasks, Private Cloud Compute for more complex requirements, and partnerships with Google in the U.S. and Alibaba in China to provide conduits to external AI services.

This deployment model allows Apple to leverage its control over both silicon and software. By moving AI to the edge—where data is processed on the device rather than a remote server—Apple reduces latency and increases user privacy.

Hardware Scaling for Edge AI and Local Models

Apple is iterating on hardware to support more demanding AI use cases. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman has predicted that future M7 Ultra Macs may support up to 1.5TB of RAM. This capacity would enable these machines to run full-weight frontier models locally in home or office settings.

Current user behavior already shows a trend toward local AI clustering. Some users are networking Mac minis via Thunderbolt cables to create AI clusters. This hardware flexibility makes Mac Studios and Mac minis attractive for businesses seeking self-hosted, private AI services.

The shift toward local execution is already visible in current apps. For example, the Locally app allows users to run PrismML’s 1-bit, 27-billion parameter Bonsai model on an iPad.

Competitive Pressure on Cloud-Based AI Services

The ability to run AI locally creates a direct challenge to the business models of cloud-centric AI providers. Investor Jason Calacanis stated in a podcast round table discussion that Apple is positioned to apply significant pressure on OpenAI and Claude simply by integrating models directly into its devices.

It’s going to be wild when people have unlimited tokens on their desks.

Many current AI queries involve simple tasks that do not require the massive compute power of a frontier cloud model. As Apple Intelligence and smaller LLMs become more capable on-device, the necessity for cloud-based subscriptions may decrease.

This trend is compounded by the emergence of affordable frontier models such as Qwen and Kimi.ai. As “good enough” models become widely available, the premium pricing and massive infrastructure investments made by early AI movers may become liabilities if they cannot find a sustainable path to profit.

The Shift Toward Private and On-Premises AI

Enterprise adoption of edge AI is accelerating through the use of open AI stacks. Computerworld notes a recent increase in the deployment of Macs to support OpenClaw instances, signaling that businesses prefer the security of on-premises AI over third-party cloud hosting.

The Shift Toward Private and On-Premises AI

By providing a platform for private AI, Apple captures a segment of the market that is wary of sending sensitive corporate data to external servers. This democratizes AI access while ensuring the hardware remains the central point of value.

As companies like PrismML continue to reduce the size of full-weight models, the gap between what a server can do and what a desktop Mac can do will continue to shrink. This further reduces the reliance on external AI providers.
