Record-high fuel costs have left drivers paying roughly 230 kroner more to fill a tank than they did six months ago, creating a heavy pinch on household budgets across Denmark. Yet that same financial squeeze has delivered a striking unintended outcome on the nation’s asphalt. Rådet for Sikker Trafik notes that fewer motorists are dying in speed-related crashes as higher prices force drivers to ease off the gas.

How High Fuel Prices Slow Down Danish Motorists

The primary driver behind the shift is simply the desire to spend less at the pump. In an Epinion survey conducted for Rådet for Sikker Trafik, 61 percent of motorists report that fuel expenses are the direct reason they now drive more slowly on country roads and motorways. Average speeds have ticked downward across the country over recent years, blunting the frequency and severity of roadway accidents.

Vehicle safety improvements and better infrastructure have also played a role, but the behavioral shift triggered by pump prices plays a major part. We have been allowed to save so many human lives, which is worth celebrating, even though we are not there yet. said Mathias Hjorth Frederiksen, who is a project manager at the Danish Council for Safe Traffic, describing the human toll saved by slower driving.

What Transport Authorities Track on Motorways and National Routes

Preliminary figures from Vejdirektoratet indicate the trend persisted into 2026. In the first four months of the year, 35 people lost their lives in traffic nationwide, a figure described as significantly lower than in recent years. The number of injured has also fallen significantly.

Drivers are paying attention to their wallets, particularly where potential savings are largest. It is therefore not surprising that it is especially on motorways that most people slow down, because it is especially at high speeds that money can be saved, explained Marianne Foldberg Steffensen, head of department at Vejdirektoratet. According to the automobile organization FDM, motorists can cut fuel consumption by 15 to 20 percent if they lower their speed on the motorway from 130 to 110 kilometers per hour.

Why The Debate Over Household Costs and Road Safety Persists

The tension between personal economic strain and public safety creates a difficult balancing act for everyday commuters. Jakob Bøving Arendt, managing director of Rådet for Sikker Trafik, acknowledges the concern regarding rising fuel prices, especially for those who rely on the car in their daily lives. At the same time, he notes that this can mean getting even more people to take the top off speed violations and respect speed limits, which means a lot for safety on the roads.
