WICHITA, Kansas — A Wichita Police Department officer was involved in a traffic crash late Thursday night while responding to an emergency call, resulting in five people being injured, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred shortly after 10 p.m. At the intersection of First Street and Hillside Avenue. The officer was operating a marked patrol vehicle and responding with lights and sirens when the collision happened, authorities said.
Kansas Highway Patrol troopers arrived at the scene and took over the investigation, as is standard procedure when a law enforcement officer is involved in a crash while on duty. The KHP confirmed that five individuals sustained injuries in the incident.
None of the injuries were reported as life-threatening, though all five were transported to local hospitals for treatment. The identities of the injured have not been released pending notification of next of kin.
The officer involved in the crash has not been publicly identified by the Wichita Police Department. The department stated that the officer was responding to a priority call at the time of the collision but did not disclose the nature of the emergency.
Both the Wichita Police Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol said the crash remains under active investigation. Investigators are reviewing dash camera footage, witness statements and physical evidence from the scene to determine the exact sequence of events.
Authorities have not indicated whether speed, failure to yield, or other factors contributed to the crash. Standard protocol requires a full review of the officer’s actions during emergency response, including adherence to intersection safety procedures.
The intersection of First and Hillside is a known high-traffic corridor in north Wichita, located near residential areas and commercial businesses. Traffic signals at the location are routinely monitored for safety compliance.
This incident marks one of several recent crashes involving emergency vehicles in the Wichita metropolitan area. Local officials have previously called for increased awareness of emergency vehicle protocols among both responders and the public.
As of Friday morning, the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, which is standard procedure in such cases. No criminal charges have been filed at this time.
The Wichita Police Department urged anyone with information about the crash to contact the Kansas Highway Patrol or the department’s internal affairs division. The investigation is expected to take several days to complete as analysts review all available evidence.
