Flamboyant Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo, who built a public persona around luxury cars, private aviation, and lavish financial handouts, died at age 43 in a helicopter crash on September 30, 2026, alongside his wife Lucy Muteke and three other individuals.
Chivayo’s death brought an end to an extraordinary and polarizing public life characterized by massive displays of wealth, including a fleet of personalized luxury cars, private planes, and an extraordinary gifting spree that began around 2023 involving cash and vehicles doled out to musicians, church leaders, sports personalities, and acquaintances. Before his rise as a wealthy tycoon and Zanu-PF campaigner, his early career included working as a wages clerk for a bus company, selling mobile phones, and dealing in foreign currency on the black market during hyperinflation. In 2005, he was convicted of money laundering involving 837,000 South African rand and served three years of a five-year sentence at Chikurubi Maximum Prison.
Business Ventures and Political Connections
Chivayo cultivated close ties with high-profile political figures, notably winning over Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who was initially unimpressed when he first came to power. Access to power became a staple of his social media presence, where he posted content showing him cruising aboard a Gulfstream G550 while celebrating President Mnangagwa. Kenyan President William Ruto also publicly mourned Chivayo, describing him as a dear friend.
Critics Question Sources of Chivayo's Wealth
While presidents offered tributes, Chivayo’s life and sudden death divided opinion sharply across Africa, leaving behind interconnected scandals and unanswered questions regarding how he accumulated his vast fortune. Critics at a shopping centre in Harare questioned whether his wealth stemmed from inflated state contracts used to support Zanu-PF while the public health system faced severe challenges.
Other historical shadows surrounding his network included stubborn Mandrax suspicions dating back to his childhood involving business connections in Zambia and South Africa.

The Legacy of Flamboyant Tycoons and Aviation Disasters
Ginimbi died at age 36 in a November 8, 2020 road accident along Borrowdale Road in Harare after his Rolls-Royce collided with a Honda Fit, alongside Michelle Amuli, Limumba Karim, and Alichia Adams. Chivayo and Lucy Muteke had previously married on March 8, 2025. In his social media posts regarding the conference, Chivayo stated, I need PRAYERS from every corner of the world,
and added, TO GOD BE ALL THE GLORY… The journey continues, and by His grace, the vision only gets BIGGER!!!
Kenyan blogger Cyprian Nyakundi criticized the political reaction, stating, As a Kenyan, I distance myself completely from President Ruto’s glowing tribute to Wicknell Chivayo.
The fatal helicopter crash also brought renewed attention to regional aviation accidents, including a UPDF combat helicopter heading toward the Democratic Republic of Congo that crashed into a house in Ntoroko on January 2, 2024, and an Equatorial Guinean military Z-9 that disappeared during a mission over the continental region in June 2026 before its wreckage was located between Niefang and Evinayong.
