An approaching cold front sweeping across Europe will deliver the first alpine snowfall of the autumn season on Oct. 8, 2026, though predicted accumulations have been significantly scaled back across Austria and Italy compared to earlier forecasts, according to skiinformatie.nl.

Reduced Snow Accumulations in the Alps

While earlier meteorological models pointed toward local accumulations reaching up to 35 centimeters in the high Alps, updated calculations show a sharp downward adjustment for regions further east. Austrian and Italian ski areas will receive considerably less snow than initially anticipated, skiinformatie.nl reported.

In Austria, St. Anton am Arlberg faces a downward revision from an initial estimate of 15 to 22 centimeters down to roughly 10 centimeters. The Zugspitze is now expected to receive about 15 centimeters, while Austrian glaciers such as the Kitzsteinhorn remain on track to record over 25 centimeters of fresh snow.

Higher Totals in the French and Swiss Mountains

The French and West-Swiss Alps retain the highest snowfall totals among alpine regions, despite downward adjustments from initial forecasts that once projected up to 49 centimeters in Vaujany. Current calculations for the higher elevations around the Mont Blanc massif still point to a substantial white layer.

Chamonix is expected to receive upwards of 27 centimeters, Vaujany approximately 26 centimeters, and Glacier 3000 near Les Diablerets alongside Mürren-Schilthorn around 22 centimeters. Engelberg-Titlis anticipates nearly 21 centimeters on its highest terrain, while lower valley areas will experience primarily rain.

Snow Cover Establishes Above 2,500 Meters

The snow-level boundary, sitting between 2,700 and 2,900 meters in the morning, will drop as colder air moves across the mountain ranges. By late evening, the freezing altitude will settle around 2,000 meters near Engelberg, Mürren, Les Diablerets, and Vaujany, while reaching approximately 2,200 meters on the Arlberg and about 2,300 meters in Salzburgerland.

Because the bulk of the precipitation arrives before the freezing line reaches its lowest point, a permanent snow cover will primarily establish itself above 2,500 meters, leaving lower slopes subject to rain or wet snow.

Heavy Early Snowfall across Scandinavia

In a reversal of regional expectations, Scandinavian ski resorts are registering the largest forecast accumulations of the season. Trysil, Kläppen, and Sälen recorded their first seasonal snowfall, with webcams capturing white landscapes across Sweden and Norway.

Lindvallen is projected to receive roughly 46 centimeters of snow through Monday, with Hundfjället anticipating nearly 41 centimeters. Kläppen and Tandådalen expect between 34 and 36 centimeters, Stöten over 33 centimeters, Trysil about 23 centimeters, and Norefjell nearly 18 centimeters.

Relief for Record-Warm Glaciers

The incoming cold front follows an exceptionally dry and record-warm summer that caused alpine glaciers to melt at record speeds. Following afternoon temperatures reaching 19 to 25 degrees Celsius, the shift to a northwesterly wind direction brings temporary relief to high-altitude ice bodies.

Switzerland alone lost more than 5 percent of its remaining glacier ice this year, with average ice thicknesses diminishing by 2.5 to 4 meters, and localized tongue melting reaching up to 10 meters. Nearly 20 percent of Switzerland’s total glacier volume has vanished over a five-year period.

High Pressure Brings Clearing Skies by Friday

Conditions across the Alps will improve rapidly by Friday morning as an extension of the Azores high-pressure system suppresses further precipitation and brings clearing skies from the west. While a secondary round of snow is expected around the Mont Blanc region and Western Switzerland on Saturday, it is projected to deliver minimal additional accumulation.
