The Minnesota Wild bolstered their defensive depth Friday, claiming defenseman Travis Dermott off waivers from the Edmonton Oilers.
Dermott, who turns 28 on December 22,signed a one-year,two-way contract with Edmonton before the season. After failing to secure a consistent spot in the Oilers’ lineup, he was placed on waivers Thursday.
The left-shot defenseman appeared in 10 games for Edmonton this season, averaging 13:05 of ice time. He did not register a point and accrued two penalty minutes with three shots on goal. This marks Dermott’s fifth NHL team since being drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the second round in 2015. He has also played for the Vancouver Canucks, Arizona Coyotes, and now the Wild. Over his 339 career NHL games,Dermott has tallied 62 points (16 goals,46 assists).
The addition of Dermott provides the Wild with another experienced option on the blue line.
Dermott to the Wild: Adding Depth or a Gamble?
NewsDirectory3.com sat down with hockey analyst, [analyst’s Name], to discuss the Minnesota Wild’s recent waiver claim of defenseman Travis Dermott from the Edmonton Oilers.
NewsDirectory3.com: Travis Dermott has bounced around the league a bit. What does he bring to the Wild?
[Analyst’s Name]: Dermott’s a solid, experienced NHL defenseman who can contribute offensively. He’s a left shot, which the Wild could use, and brings versatility. He can play on the second or third pairing and even potentially see some power play time.
NewsDirectory3.com: He hasn’t seen a ton of ice time with the Oilers this season. Is there concern he’s lost a step?
[Analyst’s Name]: It’s hard to say definitively. Sometimes players just don’t fit a certain system. The Oilers have a deep blue line, so ice time might have been hard to come by regardless of performance.
The Wild are taking a low-risk, potentially high-reward gamble here. If Dermott can rediscover his previous form,he could be a valuable addition to their defensive corps.
