Will Rohit Sharma lose his captaincy if he loses the Test Championship final?

London: Team India is gearing up for the World Test Championship final at The Oval. Rohit Sharma and his team have already started training in England. The training of the Indian team is under the supervision of head coach Rahul Dravid. After the Test Championship final, the BCCI selectors will be eyeing a new captain. After the final against the Aussies, the Indian team will tour the West Indies. The captaincy talks come in the context of Rohit’s cricketing future after the ODI World Cup in October and the star’s frequent injuries.

Age can be a challenge for Rohit Sharma in Tests. It remains to be seen how long the 36-year-old batsman’s fitness and form will keep him in the Test team. But the BCCI is in no rush to appoint a new Test captain. BCCI explains the reasons for that. “Rohit is well suited for the post of captain. Regardless of the outcome of the World Test Championship, Rohit will continue with the captaincy. But we don’t know how long he will continue to play. There has been no discussion about Rohit’s captaincy. But there will be a discussion with Rohit after the World Cup,’ a BCCI official told Inside Sport.

Although it has not been officially announced, Hardik Pandya will be the next T20 captain. The selectors have already given Hardik a chance to lead the T20. Whether Rohit will be in the T20 World Cup 2024 will depend on his performance in the IPL that year. In the last two years, Team India played 19 Tests and Rohit missed eight of them due to injury. This is the challenge before Rohit. Under Rohit’s captaincy, the team failed to win the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup. Meanwhile, with KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah battling injuries, there is a possibility that Rohit will get a few more months as the Test captain.
