The GCC leadership’s new peace proposal reinforces the UN move to end the Yemeni war, which has wreaked havoc in the Middle East. The GCC hopes that a ceasefire will become a reality if peace talks are held in Riyadh between the pro-Iranian Houthi faction and the Saudi-backed Yemeni faction. The GCC has set March 29 to April 7 for peace talks.
The GCC said that if the Houthi faction was willing to negotiate, they would be treated as guests and the necessary security would be ensured. Earlier, the Houthi faction had said it wanted peace talks in a country other than Saudi Arabia. In 2014, the Houthi faction overthrew Abdur Rabb Mansour Hadi and captured the Yemeni capital, Sanaa. This was followed by the war between the Saudi allies and the Houthis.
