Williams Racing has secured Team Principal James Vowles with a new long-term contract, the team announced Thursday. The move underscores Williams’ commitment to Vowles’ vision, as the team currently sits fifth in the Formula 1 Constructors’ Championship with 55 points, exceeding their combined totals from the previous two seasons.
Matthew Savage, chairman of Atlassian Williams Racing and Dorilton Capital, expressed enthusiasm for Vowles’ continued leadership, citing his experience and strategic direction in the team’s resurgence. Vowles, who joined Williams ahead of the 2023 campaign, will celebrate his 46th birthday on Friday.
Williams, a historic team with nine Constructors’ Championships and seven Drivers’ titles, last finished in the top three in 2015. A fifth-place finish this season would mark their best result since 2017.

Vowles has emphasized a long-term approach, encouraging risk-taking and a willingness to “break everything” to restore the team to its former glory. He highlighted the importance of overcoming the fear of failure to drive meaningful change.
Carlos Sainz Jr., who will join Williams, has expressed confidence in Vowles’ vision.Sainz told SB Nation in May that he trusts Vowles’ plan and commitment, noting that Vowles has kept his word regarding improvements to this year’s car.
vowles also commented on the contract extension: “This iconic team has already given me some incredible memories and we are all united in our ambition to build on our legacy and win World Championships again.”
Looking ahead to 2026, Williams’ partnership with Mercedes for power units could prove favorable, with rumors suggesting Mercedes is making significant progress with the new regulations.
