The Long March to Dark Mode: Windows 11 Finally Filling in the Gaps
For nearly a decade, Windows users have been on a journey towards a complete dark mode experience. Microsoft first introduced a dark mode option in Windows 10 back in 2016, but it was a fragmented experience. Patches of light and dark UI elements created a jarring visual experience for many. Now, with the latest preview build of Windows 11, that journey is taking a meaningful step forward.
Eagle-eyed Windows watcher Phantomofearth spotted updated file operation dialogs now sporting a dark theme. This means that when copying or deleting files, users will finally be greeted with a dark mode prompt rather of the previously light-themed one. While still a work in progress – the buttons within these dialogs remain light – it’s a welcome change.
This incremental update suggests a broader overhaul of Windows 11’s dark mode may be on the horizon, perhaps arriving with the 25H2 update later this year.Currently, areas like the Control Panel, Run prompt, and file properties UI remain stubbornly stuck in light mode. After nearly ten years, users are hoping Microsoft will finally address these remaining inconsistencies.
The path to a consistent dark mode hasn’t been smooth. Microsoft took years to add dark mode to File Explorer in Windows 10, a delay that highlighted the complexity of the task. Apple, in contrast, delivered a consistent dark mode experience with macOS Mojave in 2018.While Microsoft hasn’t officially announced any improvements, these small changes offer a glimmer of hope. The commitment to refining the user experience, even in these smaller details, is a positive sign for Windows users who have long desired a fully darkened interface.
