Toto Wolff Warns Mercedes ⁢Drivers Against Selfishness

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has laid down‍ the law to George Russell and Kimi antonelli: selfishness won’t be tolerated. Wolff emphasized his long-held philosophy⁣ that⁣ team success trumps individual ambition.

On-track battles between teammates can be detrimental,Wolff noted,citing the 2025‍ Canadian Grand prix incident involving McLaren‘s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. While McLaren could absorb ‍the setback, Wolff aims to avoid similar situations at Mercedes.

Wolff recalled the intense rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Nico rosberg during the 2016 season, which saw multiple collisions. He also alluded to Hamilton⁢ backing Rosberg into Sebastian vettel in a bid to⁣ improve his own championship chances. Wolff said⁤ such actions were not appreciated within Mercedes.

Wolff said ⁣he treats all team members equally, nonetheless of their role.He added that any driver prioritizing personal⁢ gain over the team’s objectives, or damaging the ⁤Mercedes brand, would face severe consequences.

“If you are selfish and you put our joint success ⁣at risk, or you damage our brand, then I’m ⁣going to ⁢be ruthless about it.You have no part in this ⁣team,” Toto Wolff said.

Russell’s contract with Mercedes‍ is up for renewal at the end of 2025. When asked about Russell’s contract after the British driver’s win at the Canadian GP, Wolff said the team would address it amid the busy race schedule. He ‍noted Russell has been part of the⁣ Mercedes junior program since age 16 and that his contract extension isn’t solely dependent on race wins.

⁤ ⁣ “He’s been a Mercedes junior likewise that Kimi was since he was 16, so it isn’t dependent on whether he wins a race, whether⁢ he performs, because we know he can,” Wolff said.

Before his Canadian GP win, Russell had been linked to Aston Martin.
