Subway Arson Leaves Woman Dead, Reigniting Safety Fears in NYC

new York, NY – A horrific attack on the New York City subway system early Sunday morning has left a woman dead and reignited fears about safety within the city’s transit network. The incident, which occurred around 7:30 a.m. on a Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue F train, involved a man setting the victim ablaze before calmly observing her as she burned.The suspect, apprehended in Manhattan’s Herald Square after being identified by a group of high school students, is believed to have arrived in the United States from Guatemala in 2018. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the attack as “callous,” detailing how the assailant used what is believed to be a lighter to ignite the victim’s clothing.

“He approached her, used what we believe to be a lighter, and set her clothing on fire,” Tisch stated during a press conference. “She was engulfed in flames within seconds.”

Disturbing video footage circulating on social media appears to show the victim engulfed in flames, while a man sits nearby seemingly watching. Police confirmed officers at the station used an extinguisher to put out the fire, but tragically, it was too late.

This horrific incident marks the second fatal attack on the subway system within hours. Earlier that night, a 37-year-old man was fatally stabbed at the Woodside-61st Street station in Queens, leaving another man injured.

The recent surge in violence has reignited concerns about the safety of the city’s subway system, despite the deployment of 750 National Guard members and 250 additional police officers earlier this year.

“Ther’s no place in a civilized society for people like this to be walking around,” said Michael Kemper, Chief Security Officer for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, during the press conference.

The NYPD credits the recent installation of cameras in all subway cars with aiding in the suspect’s swift apprehension.

The attacks have left many New yorkers shaken and fearful.

“Did you hear about what happened on the subway this weekend? It’s just awful,” Sarah said to her friend Mike.
