The women’s curling team, ‘Team Kim’, defeated Switzerland in the final of the world championship for the first time ever and took the runner-up place.

Team Kim (Gangneung City Hall), led by skip Kim Eun-jung, lost 6-7 in the final match of the 2022 Women’s World Curling Championships held in Prince George, Canada on the 28th (Korea time).

The match, which raised expectations for the championship by advancing to the final of the world championship for the first time in Korean curling history, was developed in the form of Korea following the lead of Switzerland, the ‘world’s strongest’.

It was painful to concede 3 points in the 2nd end. As Kim Eun-jung’s double takeout failed, Switzerland took three points.

The Korean national team soon followed. Switzerland placed 6 stones in the house with a precise shot, but Korea scored one point with a calm draw shot.

It was Kim Eun-jung’s freeze shot in the 7th that narrowed the gap between the two teams, who exchanged points until the 6th end. After seizing a chance with a freeze shot that was placed right in front of the opponent’s stone, the next throw shot scored 2 points and tied the score 5-5.

Tim Kim, who conceded a point in the 8th end and took a point in the 9th end, entered the 10th with a score of 6-6. Tim Kim, who entered the 10th end with a first move, had to aim for a steal to win, but Switzerland was absolutely powerful.

Kim Eun-jung’s last stone could not be placed in the desired position, and Switzerland earned 1 point after pushing out all of the Korean stones. The final result was 6-7, a good fight but a disappointing defeat.

The runner-up at the World Championships is the highest since Chuncheon City Hall’s ‘Team Minji’ won the bronze medal in 2019. Although he missed the championship, it was a valuable runner-up that washed away the pain of 8th place at the Beijing Winter Olympics last month.

In an interview after the match, Team Kim’s skip player Kim Eun-jung said, “In the beginning, we played the game by giving 3 points, but at the end we scored 2 points to create a tie. I am proud to be able to play like this in the world.”
