Abondanza began his career as a volleyball coach in 1996 at Big Power Ravenna, Italy. After that, he served as the coach of the national team of Italy, Bulgaria, Canada, and the national team of Greece, and was recognized for his leadership by leading first-class teams such as Lavita Baku of Azerbaijan, Fenerbahce of Turkey, and Zanetti Bergamo of Italy.
