World Health Organization Launches ‘Constitution of Rights for Patient Safety’ at Global Ministerial Summit

April 18, 2024 World Health Organization or the World Health Organization (WHO) launched “Constitution of rights for patient safety” At the 6th Global Ministerial Summit on Patient Safety in Santiago, Chile.

This Constitution addresses patients’ rights in terms of safety. and encourage all parties involved to use this Constitution to develop laws, policies and guidelines to ensure patient safety in their countries.

“Patient safety” refers to the processes, procedures and culture that occur in a healthcare system. that supports creating safety Reduce the risk of harm to patients when receiving services. Without discrimination based on gender, age, race or ethnicity, language, religion, physical disability. economic status or other status

Patient safety is an important element in realizing the right to health. This is especially true when 1 in 10 patients worldwide experience harm to their healthcare services, even though 50% of this harm is preventable.

These harms can result from errors in services such as unsafe surgical procedures. Dosing errors Misdiagnosis or delay Unsafe injection or blood transfusion techniques and life-threatening infections

This problem is considered a global obstacle. Because it occurs in many countries without being related to income levels. and the level of health services Most damage is not caused by a single factor. rather, it is caused by the failure of processes in a poorly designed healthcare system.

“Patient safety is a fundamental principle of healthcare services. This is to avoid harm to the patient. which represents an important global agenda and is an important component needed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.” Dr. Rudy Eggers This was stated by the director of the Office of Health Services of the World Health Organization “Patient safety can be an indicator of a country’s commitment to respecting, protecting and guaranteeing health-related human rights.”

Regarding the new Constitution on patient safety rights, it covers 10 main access rights: 1) the right to access adequate, timely and efficient healthcare services; 2) safe healthcare procedures and practices; 3) health knowledge and skills of the staff. This Constitution will be a tool for healthcare professionals, leaders and governments to build a patient-centered healthcare system. Including improving patient safety and reducing the risk of harm to healthcare services

The constitution also includes information that patients can use to campaign to protect themselves from harm. It also promotes collaboration between patients, families, healthcare providers and communities to create a healthcare system where everyone has the right to access safe, quality care.
