Meetings with Foreign Leaders
CNN reported that foreign leaders attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week are rushing to meet with Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump during their visit to the United States.
Dozens of countries have requested meetings through their official and unofficial representatives of Vice President Harris and former President Trump, with some even offering to adjust their own schedules to facilitate the meetings.
The reason foreign leaders go to such lengths is to figure out what kind of person the next U.S. president could be and to gauge the direction in which he or she will take U.S. foreign policy going forward.
Vice President Harris’ Meetings
Vice President Harris will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House in Washington, D.C. on the 26th. This will be their seventh meeting.
Prior to this, on the 23rd, he plans to meet with President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Washington DC.
The UAE is an essential ally for the United States in ending the war in Gaza and stabilizing the Middle East.
Former President Trump’s Meetings
Former President Trump wrote on social media that he met with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani at his home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida.
Former President Trump said, “The King is a man who strongly wants peace in the Middle East and around the world. We had a great relationship when I was in the White House, and it will be even better this time.”
Former President Trump plans to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with whom he has been close, this week.
Priority and Timing
Meetings with foreign leaders could be an opportunity for the candidates to showcase their diplomatic expertise, but neither candidate feels a particular need to do so.
This is because former President Trump has already served as President once, and Vice President Harris also gained diplomatic experience by meeting with various leaders while serving as Vice President.
Above all, for voters, domestic issues such as the economy, immigration and abortion are much more important than global issues such as the war in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip.
