As the United Nations General Assembly convenes in New York, foreign leaders are scrambling to meet with Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump.
According to reports, dozens of countries have requested meetings with Vice President Harris and former President Trump through official and unofficial channels, with some even offering to adjust their schedules to facilitate the meetings.
The motivation behind these efforts is to gain insight into the potential next US president and the direction of US foreign policy under their leadership.
So far, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is the only foreign leader confirmed to have met with both Vice President Harris and former President Trump.
President Zelensky has urged both presidential candidates, including President Joe Biden, to continue supporting Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression.
Vice President Harris will meet with President Zelensky at the White House in Washington, D.C. on the 26th, marking their seventh meeting.
Prior to this, on the 23rd, she plans to meet with President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Washington D.C.
The UAE is a crucial ally for the United States in ending the war in Gaza and stabilizing the Middle East.
Former President Trump recently met with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani at his home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida.
“The King is a man who strongly wants peace in the Middle East and around the world. We had a great relationship when I was in the White House, and it will be even better this time,” Trump said.
Former President Trump plans to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with whom he has been close, this week.
Meetings with foreign leaders could be an opportunity for the candidates to showcase their diplomatic expertise, but neither candidate feels a particular need to do so.
This is because former President Trump has already served as President once, and Vice President Harris also gained diplomatic experience by meeting with various leaders while serving as Vice President.
Above all, for voters, domestic issues such as the economy, immigration, and abortion are much more important than global issues such as the war in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip.
“The U.N. has become almost a sideshow,” said John Alterman, senior vice president and director of the Middle East program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
