Lisbon Prepares for World Youth Meeting: Over 600,000 Participants Expected

Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is bustling with final preparations for the highly anticipated World Youth Meeting, eagerly awaited by Catholic youth from around the globe. Scheduled to take place from the 1st to the 6th of next month, the event has already garnered an impressive registration count of more than 600,000 participants. Recognizing the logistical demands of such an immense gathering, authorities have ordered a staggering 3 million food packets for lunch and dinner. Additionally, the production of 10,000 garments is currently underway to ensure all attendees are well-equipped.

As of now, a total of 663,000 individuals have begun the registration process for the World Youth Summit, which will feature the esteemed presence of Pope Francis. With registrations from 151 countries, Spain emerges as the frontrunner with 58,531 completed registrations, followed closely by Italy with 53,803. France (41,055) and Portugal (32,771) are also strongly represented. Notably, a significant number of 14,435 participants have registered from the United States.

Accommodation and Volunteers

An overwhelming 70% of registered participants have expressed their preference for accommodation arrangements. Alongside providing homes for the visiting youth, authorities have made provisions in 470,000 centers including schools and sports clubs. These venues will serve as lodging options for those attending the youth rally. Moreover, more than 32,000 individuals have signed up to volunteer for the event under the banner of Yuvajana Sangam, with 22,282 people having already completed the registration. Among these volunteers are doctors and nurses, generously offering their services during the Summit.

Attendance by Dignitaries and Confessional Services

A total of 698 bishops and 29 cardinals have registered to attend the World Youth Summit in Lisbon, adding to the gravitas of the occasion. To accommodate the spiritual needs of the attendees, authorities have organized 150 confession booths at the Yuvajana Sangama location, known as Reconciliation Park. A dedicated team of 2,600 priests has been assigned to hear confessions. Moreover, confessions will be available in five languages: Portuguese, English, French, Spanish, and Italian.

The scale and significance of the World Youth Congress have not gone unnoticed by the media, as evidenced by the 2,069 media outlets that have contacted authorities seeking permission to cover the event and bring the Summit to the masses.

It is estimated that 6,63,000 people have started registering to participate in the World Youth Summit in the presence of Pope Francis. 313,000 people from 151 countries completed their registration. Spain tops the list of those who have completed registration. 58,531 people have already registered from Spain. Following this, 53,803 people from Italy completed the registration. France (41,055) and Portugal (32,771) are close behind. 14435 people registered from America.
