Forbes calculates these net worth estimates based on documented assets while accounting for debt and other financial factors. The rankings exclude royalties and dictators whose wealth is derived directly from their official positions, as well as individuals whose wealth cannot be completely ascertained.

The 2026 data highlights a continued concentration of wealth within the U.S. Tech sector. Outside of the United States, the highest-ranking individuals include Bernard Arnault of France and Amancio Ortega of Spain.

Historically, the list has seen significant shifts at the top. Jeff Bezos first topped the list in 2018, becoming the first centibillionaire in the ranking and surpassing Bill Gates. In 2022, Elon Musk surpassed Bezos after the latter had held the top spot for four years. In 2023, Bernard Arnault briefly surpassed Musk before Musk regained the lead in the 2026 publication.

The overall growth of billionaire wealth has been steep over the last quarter-century, rising from less than $1 trillion in 2000 to the current $20.1 trillion recorded in 2026.
