‍ ⁣ updated June⁢ 18, 2025

Miami — Xabi Alonso is calling for patience as he implements changes at Real Madrid. His plea comes ⁢after ⁤the team’s 1-1⁣ draw ⁢against ⁢Al⁤ Hilal in thier Club World cup opening match at Hard Rock Stadium.

Gonzalo García put Real Madrid ahead in the 34th minute after a lackluster ⁣first ‍half. Though, Rúben equalized for Al Hilal with a penalty. Federico Valverde’s penalty in added time was saved by goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, sealing the draw.

“The second‍ half was much better,” Alonso said during the post-match conference. “We lacked balance in‍ the first half, but we reacted well in the second. We were able to⁢ change our rhythm, have more control, ⁢and play more in⁢ the opposition half.⁣ It’s a process.”

Alonso, who took over after Carlo Ancelotti’s departure, had ⁢his first training session June 9 before heading‍ to the U.S. for the tournament. The focus is‍ on team transition and improving their soccer skills.

“I knew it would take time,” Alonso said.”There are things we have ⁣to change and correct. Everything takes time; we’ve had nine days, and some players have had just three training sessions. it’s demanding, but we want to learn.”

‍ ‍ “[Alonso] ‍ wants to see ⁤his way of playing, a different way to defend⁢ and a different way to ⁤attack,” said goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. “We ‍have to change our automatisms to what the new coach wants. That doesn’t ⁢happen in four days. We’re trying, we’re watching videos, talking a lot, and it⁢ will get better. We’ll⁤ learn ⁣a ⁢lot from ⁢this first game.”

Real ⁣Madrid played without⁣ Kylian Mbappé, who scored 43‍ goals last season, due to a fever.⁣ The team needs to⁢ improve their team performance to win the next game.

When asked about Mbappé’s return for Sunday’s game against Pachuca, Alonso said, “We⁣ don’t know. We’ll have to see how his⁢ recovery goes. he’s been ill with a virus for the last two days.” The ‍ soccer‍ team hopes⁤ for his swift ‍recovery.
