Xemu Xbox emulator now runs on jailbroken Sony PlayStation 5 consoles under the port name XPSemu, telset.id reported. Modder ZiZc3 published the project on GitHub, demonstrating the software running three games on modified console hardware.
How XPSemu Runs on Jailbroken PlayStation 5 Hardware
The software operates by utilizing QEMU TCG JIT translation to convert original Xbox CPU instructions to the PlayStation 5 CPU in real time. Telset.id reported that this translation method delivers faster performance compared to standard interpretation-based approaches. Xemu maintains its own translation layer for the original Xbox NV2A graphics processor and relies on the Vulkan API to communicate with modern hardware. Through the open-source Vulkan RADV driver developed by the creator of PS5_Vulkan, the emulator runs as a native PlayStation 5 application.
Beyond the core emulation engine, the modder added several custom interface features. XPSemu includes a controller-friendly dashboard, per-game settings, cover art display, play time tracking, game patches, performance overlays, individual game logs, and specific CPU optimizations tailored for the PlayStation 5 Zen 2 processor.
Performance Benchmarks Across Tested Titles
Testing reveals that the emulated Xbox processor acts as a primary bottleneck. The emulated CPU load reaches 85 to 97 percent capacity while the PlayStation 5 graphics processor remains mostly idle, according to telset.id. Because of this CPU constraint, applying resolution multipliers of 3x to 4x or using FSR upscaling yields no performance gains.
Performance varies significantly depending on the specific game title. Telset.id detailed the benchmark results for four tested games:
- Halo 2 runs at 30 frames per second on stock settings, while a community 60 frames per second patch achieves 51 to 60 frames per second during opening sequences and 36 to 50 frames per second during active gameplay.
- Forza Motorsport hits its 30 frames per second menu limit but drops to 15 to 21 frames per second during actual racing segments.
- Fable: The Lost Chapters sustains 22 to 30 frames per second in standard areas and drops to 10 to 20 frames per second in demanding zones.
- Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex operates smoothly without major performance hurdles.
Current Testing Status and Broader Emulation Developments
The software remains in an active testing phase. Telset.id noted that developers cannot guarantee stability for all titles, as certain games encounter graphical glitches or fail to boot entirely. The development team plans to test ISO file formats alongside the current folder-based testing and intends to open a Discord server for bug reports and user feedback.
This release coincides with other emulation projects for jailbroken PlayStation 5 hardware. Developers BrinoTk and Mihawk9_9 announced separate Xbox 360 and PlayStation 5 Proton emulation projects on social media platforms, with the Xbox 360 emulator already released for testing. These projects follow existing implementations for older PlayStation platforms and Nintendo handhelds running through RetroArch on jailbroken consoles.
