In 2018, the Xiamen Gezi Opera Research Center created and staged the Gezi Opera “Qiao Pi” This is my country’s first opera stage artwork with the theme of Chinese overseas. Through a letter of Chinese overseas sealing and the story behind it, it’ n tells the story of the blood and tears of overseas Chinese who traveled across the ocean, and a difficult entrepreneurial story, showing the deep feelings of overseas Chinese towards their family and country and their tenacious fighting spirit. Gezai’s opera heroine appears on the big screen this time

Winner of Chinese Drama Plum Blossom Award and Wenhua Performance Award, Su Yanrong, leading actress of Xiamen Gezi Opera Research Center, is the heroine of the Gezi Opera “Qiao Pi”. This time she still plays the heroine Ruyi in the film version of “Qiao Pi” The girl played the role of a woman in her 30s, with an age span of 15 years.

“I have always felt very happy and excited from the time I started filming until now.” Su Yanrong said that movies are different from stage plays. For example, after the death of the character Yaxiang in the drama, Nikko and Yaxiang appeared on stage at the same time to communicate emotions in different time and space, but there were some compromises in the movie scenes. For another example, Ruyi’s role was relatively limited in terms of characterization due to time constraints on the stage, but this time the image of the character in the film is more fleshy. Ruyi was repeatedly persuaded by her family to sacrifice personal love for the sake of her family. When she married Boss Wang, her inner struggle was shown through close-ups of her face. When they get married, there are only noisy scenes of gongs and drums on stage, but in the film, Nikko appears directly in the wedding scene. The male and female protagonists are relatively speechless and more contagious

Su Yanrong said that there are also differences between stage performances and film performances. On stage, when actors express sadness from afar, they often have to expand the details to make the audience feel the emotions. When making a film, you need to be restrained. The more natural the better. Turning your head slightly or looking back are very delicate things. However, such a change is not difficult for the main actors of the Gezi opera “Qiao Pi”. “We have performed nearly a hundred performances on stage before, and we are very familiar with “Qiao Pi”. It can be said that we have a thorough understanding of the tricks and characters. Now when we perform in front of the camera, we could meet the director’s requirements quickly. I would also participate in the creation and present my own ideas. The director was very happy to work with us, and the filming was much faster than the originally expected.”

Su Yanrong said it was her first time starring in an opera film and she won a lot. Although filming is very hard, I start putting on make-up at five or six in the morning every day, and the filming lasts all day, but everyone is working hard, tired and happy.
