Yoon Seok-yeol, the presidential candidate for the People’s Power, decided to directly investigate the suspicion of the company’s preferential treatment for the development project in the Gongheung district of Yangpyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do, rather than the local police station.
The Gyeonggi Nambu Police Agency decided to take over the investigation of the case, which was in charge of the Yangpyeong Police Station, from the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crime Investigation Unit of the Gyeonggi Nambu Office, considering the seriousness of the matter and the ability to mobilize investigative personnel.
The police also explained that Choi has been automatically booked as the accused as a civic group has received complaints specifying Yoon’s mother-in-law Choi Eun-soon as the accused.
The Gongheung district development project was changed to private development after LH abandoned the project in July 2011 while trying to build a national rental housing in the area of 22,000 square meters in Gongheung-ri, Yangpyeong-gun.
In June 2016, 9 days before the approval of the project completion, Yangpyeong-gun retroactively changed the expiry date of the project execution plan approval period even though the business owner, Mr. Yoon’s family, did not apply for an extension.
