ANAHEIM,Calif. — The New York ‍Yankees are solidifying their status as a top contender in the American League. On Monday, they defeated the Los ⁤Angeles Angels 5-1, marking⁣ their ‌14th win in the ⁢last⁢ 18⁣ games.Anthony Volpe’s ⁢key hit and Ryan Yarbrough’s effective pitching were central to the Yankees’ latest triumph.

Manager Aaron Boone, while‌ refraining ⁤from declaring victory, acknowledged the team’s potential.”We’ve ‍got ⁣a ‌lot of ⁤reasons to believe we have a chance to be‌ a⁢ really‍ good team,” Boone said before the game.

Volpe’s ⁣bases-clearing double in the fourth inning broke the game open, ⁢while Yarbrough pitched six strong innings, ⁤allowing just one run.The Yankees’ offense capitalized on opportunities, and their pitching staff continues ⁢to excel.

“I think every night,we’re just ‍going out with confidence in each other,” Volpe said. “We just feel really good about the brand of baseball we’re‌ playing.”

Despite missing key players like Gerrit Cole⁢ and Luis Gil, the Yankees’ pitching has remained strong.‌ Yarbrough, in particular, has stepped up, posting‍ a 2-0 record with a 2.25 ERA in four starts as replacing Carlos Carrasco in the rotation. as a whole,⁣ Yankees starters ‌lead the majors with ⁤a 2.37 ERA this month.

Yarbrough relies on a mix of pitches and deception to get outs. ⁣”I’ve never been the guy to really blow up a radar ⁣gun,” Yarbrough said. “I’ve really had to ⁣understand how to get guys out…it’s ⁣not something they’re used to⁢ seeing every day.”

Volpe, who previously faced Yarbrough ‌in the American league East, ‍understands the challenges he presents to hitters. “It’s not ⁤a fun at-bat from ⁢the other side,” Volpe said.

In the fourth‌ inning, the Yankees rallied after Jack‌ Kochanowicz retired the first nine batters.Singles by ‌Ben Rice, Trent Grisham, ⁤and Aaron Judge‌ loaded the bases, ‌followed by a‌ walk to Cody ⁣Bellinger that tied the game. Volpe then delivered his decisive double.

Boone highlighted Volpe’s patience at the ⁣plate, noting ⁣that he didn’t swing at a tough first ⁣pitch. “That’s a pitch that⁢ if he fires at, good chance⁤ he pounds that in the ground to third base,” Boone ‍said.

Volpe⁢ explained his approach: “keep it simple: get the ball up.”

What’s next

The Yankees will look to continue their winning ways as they⁤ proceed ⁤through their schedule, relying on contributions⁤ from throughout the roster.
