Yankees Rejected Adley Rutschman Trade Over Prospect Demand

The New York Yankees missed out on catcher Adley Rutschman ahead of the trade deadline because they refused to part with outfield prospect Yostin Pena, according to a report. The Baltimore Orioles were prepared to send Rutschman to their American League East rivals in exchange for a package of at least four players.

Yankees Reject Trade Package Demand

According to a report by Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Baltimore demanded catcher Austin Wells, right-handed pitcher Elmer Rodriguez, outfield prospect Yostin Pena, and either Ryan Weathers or Will Warren. New York ultimately rejected the terms because front office officials did not want to trade Pena. While the Yankees needed catching help, the refusal to meet Baltimore’s four-player asking price kept the deal from materializing.

Red Sox Complete Blockbuster Acquisition

Division rivals actively pursued the star catcher during the negotiations. NESN reported that division rivals the Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays were discussing a trade to acquire Rutschman from the Orioles. Boston’s acquisition leaves Rutschman set to hit the free-agent market next offseason unless the club signs him to an extension.

American League Playoff Impact

The missed opportunity allowed Boston to secure one of the top three catchers in the sport. New York recently defeated Boston in the Wild Card round of the American League playoffs, but front office decisions over recent seasons have consistently aided the Red Sox roster building. When healthy, Boston projects as one of the top contenders in the American League, anchored by Rutschman’s presence in the lineup.
