KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A daring dash by Pablo Reyes secured a 1-0 victory for the New York Yankees over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday, completing a season sweep. Reyes’ eighth-inning sprint from second base, combined with a strong pitching performance from Will Warren, proved decisive in the Yankees’ latest win.
The game remained scoreless until the eighth when Paul Goldschmidt hit a grounder that deflected off Vinnie Pasquantino’s glove. As the ball trickled away, Reyes, who had reached on a single, found himself in between bases. A moment of hesitation turned into a mad dash for home after encouragement from third base coach Luis Rojas.
Reyes slid headfirst, evading the tag of catcher Freddy Fermin, whose errant throw allowed the winning run to score. The Yankees’ baserunning and defence proved to be the difference.
Warren pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just four hits. The Yankees’ pitching staff held Kansas City to 0-for-17 with runners in scoring position throughout the three-game series.
“Pablo juked him out, I think,” said Warren, reflecting on Reyes’ pivotal play.
Manager Aaron Boone admitted he had a moment of panic when he saw Reyes caught between bases. “I saw Pablo stop halfway and then I was like, ‘Oh, no,’” Boone said.“And then we’re still able to score, so, whew, we’ll take it.”
Erceg lamented his errant throw, saying, “[I] noticed he was kind of stuck out in the middle, so I wanted to get him going in one direction or the other,” Erceg said. “Once he started running toward home, I felt like I didn’t really have time to set my feet. I thought [I] was going to be athletic enough to make that play. But [I] made an errant throw.”
Reyes, speaking through an interpreter, described the pressure of the moment. “There is a little bit of panic because it’s later in the game, it’s the eighth inning and you definitely want to score there,” reyes said.
