Yankees Complete Sweep of Angels Behind schmidt, Leiter Jr. Heroics
ANAHEIM, calif. — The New York Yankees finished off a series sweep of the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday, securing a tight 1-0 victory. clarke Schmidt pitched six scoreless innings, while Mark Leiter Jr.closed the door in the ninth for his second save of the season. The Yankees’ victory marked their first 1-0 win against the Angels since 1970.
The game was not without its strategic moments. Angels manager Ron Washington twice intentionally walked Aaron Judge in the first two innings. Judge acknowledged the strategy with a tip of his helmet. the intentional walks ultimately did not hurt the Angels until Leiter Jr. shut them down.
Leiter Jr. secured the save by striking out Logan O’Hoppe on a curveball that catcher J.C. Escarra admitted was outside the strike zone. Escarra joked about stealing the strike to win the game. The Yankees’ pitching staff has been a key to their success.
“Definitely a ball, way out ther,” said Escarra, still smiling despite having absorbed numerous welts from a rough night behind the plate. “That’s what we work on every day, to help our pitchers and steal strikes. That one was really special, because it was to win a ballgame.”
Schmidt’s strong performance and the bullpen’s ability to maintain the lead contributed to the Yankees’ fifth consecutive win. The Angels, who had been averaging 7.6 runs per game during an eight-game win streak, were held to just three runs in the entire series.
“I guess that’s what a sports fan feels like when you’re watching the games — you’re on the edge of your seat,” Schmidt said. “We were in here cheering every pitch, every strike. It’s a lot of fun.”
Yusei Kikuchi pitched well for the Angels, limiting the Yankees to one run on four hits over five innings. The lone run came in the first when Anthony Volpe hit a sacrifice fly after Judge was intentionally walked.
“I didn’t really like the intentional walk there, but it’s the manager’s decision, so we’ll just go with it,” Kikuchi said through interpreter Yusuke Oshima.
Washington defended his decision to walk Judge, saying he didn’t want to risk Judge beating his team. Judge became the first Yankee as 1953 to be intentionally walked twice in the first two innings of a game.
“He’s dangerous,” Washington said. “I don’t know what would’ve happened in that game if I wouldn’t have walked him those first two times. You don’t mess with that. I don’t care how he’s swinging the bat. You don’t mess with that if you don’t have to.”
