Twelve people were killed and more than 300 others were injured when a missile struck King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on October 10, 2026, marking the deadliest attack on Saudi Arabian soil in over a decade. The strike disrupted international travel across the region, as regional carriers canceled dozens of flights and analysts warned that even advanced multi-layered defense systems struggled to protect the vast desert kingdom from persistent aerial assaults.
Houthi Warnings Over US Involvement
Following reports that Saudi Arabia requested Washington to help manage the militant group, a Houthi official warned that the United States would face a painful retaliation if it joined the war in Yemen. Mohammed al-Bukaiti, a member of the Houthi political bureau, told AFP that the group would not hesitate to launch a swift and severe counter-attack targeting American interests in the region if Washington intervened in the conflict.
If the US gets involved in the aggression against Yemen, we will not hesitate to decide to respond, and it will be a quick and violent response, targeting the US and all American interests in this region.

Al-Bukaiti also issued a warning to all workers and officials at Saudi oil sites and airports to stay away from those locations, declaring them legitimate targets. The Houthi official stated that the objective of striking targets inside Saudi Arabia was to send a message to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman that he could no longer wage war on Yemen from a secure position.
Defense Limitations and Economic Impact
Andreas Krieg of the London-based risk firm MENA Analytica noted that even multi-layered defense systems incorporating Patriot batteries, THAAD units, fighter jets, and various sensors cannot create an impenetrable dome over a country as large as Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia relies heavily on importing advanced weaponry from Western manufacturers in America, Britain, and France due to a limited domestic military industry.

Airlines Suspend Riyadh Routes
Bahrain’s national carrier, Gulf Air, likewise canceled all Riyadh flights through October 17, while Delta Air Lines delayed the planned launch of its direct route from Atlanta to Riyadh, which had been scheduled for October 23.
US Considering Retaliatory Strikes Against Houthis
President Donald Trump described the attack as unacceptable and told reporters that Washington was considering participating in Saudi-led retaliatory strikes against the Houthis. Trump faces domestic political constraints ahead of mid-term elections and promised after winning election in 2024 to end America’s involvement in foreign wars, even as the U.S. remains entangled in multiple Middle Eastern conflicts.
The Saudi civil aviation authority confirmed U.S. citizens were among the casualties, prompting President Trump to remark that Saudi forces possess strong combat capabilities while keeping open the possibility of direct U.S. military involvement.
