A collection of early artwork created by Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, during his teenage years has been valued at $3.1 million following a dramatic reassessment of its market worth.
The collection, which consists of five original paintings and drawings, first gained public attention in 2020 when it appeared on the PBS program Antiques Roadshow. During that appearance, appraiser Laura Woolley estimated the value of the pieces to be between $16,000 and $23,000.
Washington D.C.-based entrepreneur and art collector Vinoda Basnayake tracked down the works after seeing them on the program and purchased them in 2021 for an undisclosed amount. Basnayake maintained a non-disclosure agreement regarding the purchase price but later sought a new evaluation of the collection.
In late 2025, Basnayake secured a second appraisal conducted by the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP). This new evaluation significantly increased the valuation to $3.1 million, according to reporting from Page Six.
Contextualizing the Creative Journey
The substantial increase in value is attributed to a shift in how the artwork is perceived by experts. Basnayake stated that the initial valuation from the PBS program failed to account for the broader cultural significance of the pieces.
materially missed the bigger picture because they approached the work as typical celebrity art, which on its own doesn’t usually command major value.

The USPAP appraiser determined that the works should be viewed as the opening chapter in the creative journey of an individual who became a leading producer, musical artist, and fashion designer for his generation. This perspective recognizes Ye’s multidisciplinary influence, extending his legacy from music into the realm of visual art.
The five pieces were completed while Ye was an art student at the Polaris School in his hometown of Chicago, Illinois. A central piece of the collection is a drawing of his mother, Donda West, created circa 1995. This specific portrait has been valued at $335,000.
International Concert Postponements
Parallel to the reassessment of his early art, Ye has faced significant resistance from international officials regarding his planned global performances.

On April 14, 2026, Ye announced the postponement of a planned concert in France. The decision followed opposition from Marseille’s mayor, Benoit Payan, who voiced his refusal to allow the artist to perform at the Vélodrome.
I refuse to let Marseille be a showcase for those who promote hatred and unapologetic Nazism. Kanye West is not welcome at the Vélodrome, our temple of living together and of all Marseillais.

In a message shared on X, Ye stated that he takes full responsibility for his actions and expressed a desire to avoid putting his fans in the middle of the conflict. He wrote, I know it takes time to understand the sincerity of my commitment to make amends.
Similar restrictions occurred in the United Kingdom, where the Home Office blocked Ye from entering London to headline the Wireless Festival. The block was issued in response to past antisemitic remarks made by the artist.
Following the UK travel ban, Ye offered to meet with leaders of the Jewish community to demonstrate a commitment to change. In a statement, he noted that his goal was to present a show of change, bringing unity, peace, and love through my music, while acknowledging that words aren’t enough and that he must show change through his actions.
