Construction unions in reality ‘general strike’… The government and the ‘power-to-power clash’

[앵커]

Today, the Korean Confederation of Construction Workers Union (KCTU) is holding a large-scale rally in downtown Seoul against the government’s general pressure.

Throughout the afternoon, traffic jams occur as some roads around Gwanghwamun and Sungnyemun are controlled.

We connect reporters who are out in the field.

Yes, I am at the assembly site at Sungnyemun Gate in Seoul right now.

A little while ago, from 3:00pm, a large-scale rally is underway as members of the construction union move from the vicinity of Jonggak Station to Sungnyemun Gate.

I can see a large placard being held by a tall crane behind me.

A picket saying ‘Let’s change the building site’ and ‘Oppression is a struggle’ can also be seen here and there.

More than half of all members of the construction union came to this rally, and the organizers estimate that around 45,000 people gathered.

It is really a general strike.

Protesters condemned the government for blaming unions for all the absurdities that happen on construction sites.

He then expressed his position that he would fight to the end against the labor oppression of the Yoon Seok-yeol government.

The government also stands firmly against the de facto general strike of the construction unions.

The police announced that they would mobilize more than 100 riot squads and more than 7,000 soldiers to take strict action against all illegal acts taking place on the assembly premises.

The plan is to immediately arrest anyone who occupies a lane or attacks a police officer during a rally.

Fortunately, no physical confrontations have occurred between the protesters and the police so far.

As some of the lanes near Sungnyemun Gate are currently being controlled, traffic in the area is being disrupted.

Police encouraged the use of public transportation as extreme traffic congestion is expected as this is a large-scale rally in downtown Seoul.
