China and the day before the party congress

A day before the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, which will determine Chinese President Xi Jinping’s third term, Taiwanese media reported that security in Beijing had been significantly strengthened.

Posts were built around Shitongqiao, where banner demonstrations criticizing Xi were held, and police were stationed.

More plainclothes officers than police immediately stopped suspicious behavior while monitoring passers-by, and elderly volunteers wearing red armbands were also deployed to control passers-by.

The authorities also strengthened cyber censorship, blocking searches for keywords such as ‘Shi Tongqiao’ and ‘Beijing flag’ as well as the proper name ‘Beijing’.
