YouTube Increases Minimum‌ Age for Live Streaming to 16

Updated June 25, 2025

YouTube, owned by Google,⁢ is increasing the minimum age requirement for creators to live stream on its platform. The change, confirmed on ⁣youtube’s Help support page, will require streamers to be ‍at ⁤least 16 years old.Previously, the minimum age was 13.

The reason⁤ for the change was not explicitly stated, but it is likely related to child safety concerns.⁣ The ⁣new age ⁣restrictions apply across all YouTube platforms, including the Android and⁤ iOS apps, ‍as well as the ⁣website.

YouTube said that creators under⁢ 16 who attempt to live stream without proper supervision could face penalties. These penalties may include a temporary suspension of live streaming capabilities or restricted access to features like live chat. The severity ‍of the penalty will likely depend on the specific circumstances and whether it is a first offense.

The new minimum age ⁤for live streaming on YouTube ⁣goes into effect July 22. Until then, the ⁤current⁢ age restrictions remain in place. After july 22, creators under 16 must have a parent ⁣or guardian present and visibly participating in the stream. YouTube specifies that the adult must be‌ granted ‌access to the channel as an editor, manager, or owner.

“If you’re under 16 and an adult is willing to live ⁣stream with you, you can give the adult access to your channel as⁣ an editor, manager or owner,” YouTube said.

What’s next

The upcoming change is expected to substantially impact some creators. The grace period before the new rules take ⁣effect is intended to ⁢give younger‌ streamers time to adjust their content and ‍streaming schedules, ensuring they ⁣comply with ‍the new requirements.
