YouTube Now Uses AI to Guess Your Age – and Restrict Access If It Thinks You’re Under 18

YouTube is rolling out a new AI-powered age estimation system that could substantially impact how users experience the platform. The system, dubbed an “age-estimation model” by YouTube, aims to determine a user’s age nonetheless of the birthdate listed on their account. If the AI suspects a user is under 18,it will automatically apply restrictions and safety measures, even if the user claims to be older.
How YouTube’s AI Age Verification Works
The new system doesn’t rely solely on the birthday provided during account creation. Rather,YouTube’s AI analyzes a variety of factors, including account activity and account longevity,to infer a user’s age. This means even long-time users with verified accounts could find themselves subject to restrictions if the AI deems them likely to be underage.
According to James Beser, senior director of product management for YouTube’s youth products, the technology allows YouTube to “deliver our age-appropriate product experiences and protections” irrespective of the stated birthdate. The initial rollout is limited to a small group of users in the US, with the goal of ensuring appropriate experiences for both teens and adults.
What Restrictions Will Under-18 Users Face?
The restrictions applied to users identified as under 18 are similar to those already in place for accounts designated as belonging to minors. These include:
Limited Ad Personalization: Only non-personalized advertisements will be shown.
Digital Wellbeing Tools: “Digital wellbeing” features, such as break reminders and bedtime prompts, will be enabled by default.
Privacy Reminders: Users will receive reminders about privacy settings when uploading videos or making public comments.
reduced Problematic Recommendations: The algorithm will minimize recommendations for videos containing content perhaps harmful if viewed repeatedly.
Age-Restricted Content Blocking: Access to videos restricted to viewers 18 and older will be blocked. This includes content flagged by YouTube or verified as mature by the community.
Verifying Your Age with YouTube
Users who believe the AI has incorrectly estimated their age have the option to verify it through one of three methods:
government ID: Uploading a government-issued identification document.
Selfie: Submitting a selfie for age verification.
Credit Card: providing credit card information.
However, this verification process has sparked concern among users.
Concerns Over Privacy and Data security
The introduction of AI-driven age estimation has been met with criticism, primarily centered around privacy and data security. Many users are uneasy about having their account access determined by an algorithm with limited clarity.
A significant concern is the requirement to upload sensitive personal information – such as a government ID – to prove age. Users fear this could expose them to data leaks and potential identity theft. The reliance on AI also raises questions about accuracy and the potential for false positives, leading to unwarranted restrictions.
YouTube maintains that it is committed to protecting user privacy and providing a safe online experience. In a blog post, Beser emphasized that YouTube was “one of the first platforms to offer experiences designed specifically for young people” and is “proud to again be at the forefront of introducing technology that allows us to deliver safety protections while preserving teen privacy.”
Despite these assurances, the rollout of this new system is likely to continue to generate debate and scrutiny as YouTube balances safety concerns with user privacy and autonomy.
