Rockies’ Zach Agnos Finds Strength in family Legacy After Save
Updated June 03, 2025
Miami — Rockies closer Zach Agnos secured his fourth save of the season Monday night against the Marlins, a 6-4 victory at loanDepot park that he dedicated to his family, notably his late father and grandfather. Agnos, visibly emotional, said his family’s legacy and his faith provide him strength on the mound.
The save wasn’t without its tense moments. After allowing a leadoff hit in the ninth with a two-run lead, a fortuitous bounce on a blooper aided the rockies. Agustín Ramírez of the Marlins hit a ball that landed between Thairo Estrada and Tyler Freeman, but Freeman recovered and forced out Jesús Sánchez at second. Agnos then induced a double play from Kyle stowers to end the game.
The Rockies’ victory, improving their record to 10-50, featured two home runs from catcher Hunter goodman and a solid five-inning performance from starter Germán Márquez, who overcame an early 4-1 deficit. Despite the win, the Rockies are still enduring one of the worst 60-game starts in modern baseball history.
Agnos, drafted by the Rockies in 2022, features a four-pitch mix, including a fastball, split-finger changeup, sweeper, and cutter. He said he relied on all of them against the Marlins.
”I’m a man of faith,” Agnos said. “I believe he’s watching every game, and he’s with me every step of the way.”
Agnos will be on bereavement leave to attend services in Richmond. He expressed gratitude for the support from his teammates and the Rockies organization.
“Showing up at the field every day gets your mind off it,and we have a great group of guys who truly care about you,” Agnos said, acknowledging the support he received upon hearing of his grandfather’s passing.
Goodman’s two home runs provided the Rockies with an early advantage. Agnos expressed his appreciation for Goodman’s contribution.
“I’ll give that guy a hug provided that he wants,” agnos said of Goodman, “as long as he hits two home runs a game.”
What’s next
agnos will be away from the team temporarily, but is expected to return soon. The Rockies continue their season, aiming to build on this victory.
