Public healthcare workers on the Greek island of Zante have raised urgent alarms after reporting eight rapes in just 20 days. The surge has placed extreme pressure on local medical facilities during the peak holiday season.
Eight Reported Rapes in Twenty Days Strains Zante Healthcare
According to Michalis Giannakos, president of the public healthcare workers’ union POEDIN, victims sought emergency medical attention at Zakynthos Hospital. The targeted assaults are primarily linked to the area of Laganas, which draws holidaymakers for its vibrant nightlife.
Resort Nightlife and Hospital Forensic Examinations
Zakynthos Hospital has faced severe strain following the influx of tourist-related injuries and trauma cases. Giannakos stated that individuals are taking advantage of the state of intoxication in which victims may be, calling the incidents abhorrent and humiliating.
Hospital gynecologists performed forensic examinations on the victims following the assaults. Local media reports indicate that most of these attacks are linked to Laganas.
Arrests and the British Teenagers’ Case
Official police statements outline that three specific incidents were reported to competent authorities between May and August 6. All legal procedures were followed in cooperation with the prosecutor’s office, forensic teams, and health authorities. Two arrests have been made in connection with those initial reports.
In a separate case highlighted by local media outlet Ethnos, two 18-year-old British women accused a man in Zante of raping them. Both victims told police they were attacked by the same individual, prompting an urgent police probe after the pair were taken to the hospital for medical examinations.
According to local reporting, the mother of one of the victims drove directly from the UK to Greece upon hearing the allegations. She tracked down the suspect to his workplace and attacked him. Police officers were called to the scene, taking both the mother and the suspect to the station. Authorities have since arrested the suspect on suspicion of rape and filed a case against him.
Legal Barriers and Ongoing Police Investigations
Despite the high number of hospital-reported assaults, many victims face barriers in pursuing legal action. Local media reported that no prosecutions were brought forward in several of the POEDIN-cited cases because the women refused to name alleged perpetrators and declined to file formal charges.
In another recent instance, an Italian tourist required specialized medical treatment for injuries she stated were caused following a rape. Police and local authorities continue to investigate the complaints and the circumstances surrounding the reports.
