Request Made During UN General Assembly Meeting
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky requested long-range rockets from former U.S. President Donald Trump during a recent meeting at the United Nations General Assembly. Sources indicate Zelensky believes providing Ukraine with these advanced weapons will compel Russian president Vladimir Putin to engage in peace negotiations.
Zelensky stated in a post-meeting interview that Trump had agreed to consider the proposal for supplying winged rockets with a considerable operational range. The specifics of the agreement, however, remain unclear.
Tomahawk Rockets Proposed
The requested rockets are believed to be Tomahawk missiles, possessing a range of 2,500 kilometers and a 450 kg warhead. This capability would substantially exceed the range and effectiveness of similar long-range weaponry currently provided to Ukraine by other Western allies.
A previous request for the same type of rockets was denied by former U.S. President Joe Biden, as part of Zelensky’s ten-point “victory plan” presented towards the end of Biden’s presidency.
U.S. Response and Diplomatic Signals
U.S. Secretary of State Marko Rubio reportedly informed European colleagues that Trump’s shifting stance on Ukraine should be interpreted “as positively as possible.” Sources within diplomatic circles also revealed Rubio conveyed that Trump is “very angry” with Putin for disregarding his previous attempts to achieve a resolution to the conflict, which has lasted three and a half years as of September 2024.
Despite the reported agreement in principle, the success of Zelensky’s attempt to secure Tomahawk rockets from the U.S. remains uncertain.
