Ukraine’s president has called for a stronger international response too Russia, emphasizing the need for coercion to achieve peace. The president stated:
It is indeed impossible to ignore hundreds of ‘mined’ every night. We expect a reaction, a serious reaction. We work to a reaction. A strong reaction is very necessary – primarily America, Europe, all in the world who made a bet on diplomacy. Russia must be forced to peace. And only coercion will work.
The president also noted that a U.S. offer of an unconditional ceasefire has remained unanswered by russia for an extended period. He believes that increased pressure on the Russian federation, particularly through sanctions, could have already led to a ceasefire.
“This says a lot. There could already be a ceasefire if there was real pressure on Russia,” the president said. “I want to thank those of the partners who understand this and who promote the necessary decisions. In particular, these are new sanctions decisions.”
Concerns Over Energy Truce
Negotiations in Riyadh between the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia reportedly resulted in a partial 30-day truce, at least concerning energy infrastructure. This agreement was intended to halt strikes on energy facilities.
While Russia has stated that the truce has been in effect sence March 18, reports suggest otherwise.
According to a presidential advisor, at least two strikes damaging energy infrastructure were recorded on March 27. Furthermore, on March 28, reports emerged of Russian attacks on Naftogaz facilities, impacting gas production capabilities.
