Zelensky Suggests NATO Membership Could Shift War Dynamics with Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky suggested that the war with Russia could enter a “hot phase” if Ukraine joins NATO. He indicated that he would be open to negotiating the return of occupied territories later, provided Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders are respected.
Zelensky stated, “To stop the hot phase of the war, the territory of Ukraine must be under NATO’s protection.” He believes this would allow for future diplomatic negotiations related to other territories.
He emphasized that maintaining recognized Ukrainian borders is essential. Zelensky also called for a ceasefire to ensure that President Vladimir Putin does not expand Russia’s territory into Ukraine.
He expressed his willingness to work with the newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump. Zelensky wants direct communication with Trump and aims to have a close dialogue to promote cooperation between the U.S. and Ukraine.
Zelensky responded to reports claiming that Trump might propose ceding land to Russia in exchange for NATO membership. He noted that he will work with Trump and his team to gain maximum support. Zelensky mentioned that their previous meeting was warm and constructive.
This is the first time Zelensky has hinted at a ceasefire that may involve Russian control over some Ukrainian territory. Throughout the conflict, he has resisted ceding any land to Russia, including Crimea. Currently, Russia occupies about 18% of internationally recognized Ukrainian territory.
Putin has previously demanded that Ukraine drop its NATO aspirations to reach a peace agreement. The war, now nearly three years old, has intensified as the U.S. has allowed Ukraine to use long-range missiles against Russian military targets, resulting in increased attacks from Russia.
