[국제]Biden to visit Saudi Arabia next month

[앵커]

US President Joe Biden visits Saudi Arabia, where relations have deteriorated since taking office.

Analysts say that the background of President Biden’s visit to Saudi Arabia was the soaring oil price, which is a major cause of inflation.

This is reporter Kim Jin-ho’s report.

White House press secretary Karin Jean-Pierre said President Biden plans to visit the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia and Israel, from the 13th to the 16th of next month.

Following his visit to Israel, President Biden will also visit the West Bank of the Jordan River to continue discussions with the Palestinian Authority.

President Biden will then visit Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

A visit to Saudi Arabia will include a meeting with Saudi Arabia’s de facto leader, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Relations with Saudi Arabia deteriorated, with the Biden administration vowing not to sell arms to Saudi Arabia after Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was blamed for the assassination of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

For this reason, President Biden’s visit can also be interpreted as a sign of reconciliation or a change in the ambassador’s policy.

[카린 장-피에르 / 백악관 대변인 : 우리는 관계를 단절시키려고 하지 않습니다. 하지만 인권 문제나 인권 대화도 대통령이 많은 지도자들과 함께 다룰 계획입니다.]

The realistic need that Saudi Arabia, an oil-rich country, desperately needs help to stabilize the soaring oil price after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine seems to have worked toward restoring relations with the Crown Prince.
