A series of viral images and videos claiming to show the capture or rescue of U.S. Air Force personnel in Iran during April 2026 have been identified as fake or misrepresented by multiple fact-checking organizations.

The misinformation emerged following reports that the United States conducted a rescue mission in early April 2026 to retrieve two Air Force members whose aircraft was downed in Iran. According to reports from The New York Times and other outlets, two officers ejected from an F-15E fighter jet on April 3 after it was hit by Iranian fire. One pilot was rescued shortly after by U.S. Military helicopters and airplanes, while a weapons systems officer was later extracted by U.S. Commandos during a mission deep within Iranian territory.

Misrepresented Historical Footage

Following the April 3 incident, a video circulated on social media, including a Facebook reel published on April 5, 2026, claiming to show a captured American F-15 pilot. The footage depicts a pilot being questioned about his name, nationality and aircraft type.

Fact-checkers from Lead Stories and AFP have confirmed that the video does not show a pilot captured in 2026. Instead, the footage features Col. David William Eberly, who was shot down over Iraq and taken prisoner in 1991 during the Gulf War. Records from the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum verify that Col. Eberly served as the Director of Operations of the 4th Fighter Wing (Provisional) and was released from Iraqi captivity on March 5, 1991.

the South China Morning Post reported that other videos claiming to show Iran capturing a U.S. Pilot were actually filmed in Pakistan.

AI-Generated Imagery

Alongside the misrepresented video, several images spread across Facebook, X, and Instagram claiming to show U.S. Service members in Iran. One widely shared image purported to show a rescued officer holding a U.S. Flag while surrounded by soldiers.

Snopes has rated this image as fake, noting that it was created or altered using artificial intelligence tools. A reverse image search on Google found no credible sources for the photograph.

Another image circulating on X since April 5, 2026, claimed to show a female U.S. Captain captured by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. The post alleged that the soldier was being held in a Central Operations Room in Tehran.

Analysis by Lead Stories, utilizing Google’s Gemini AI assistant and the Hive Moderation AI-Generated Content Detection tool, determined the image was AI-generated. The image contained a SynthID watermark, indicating it was created or edited using Google AI tools, and exhibited visual inconsistencies and a lack of natural detail.

Official Status of Personnel

Despite the proliferation of these AI-generated images and historical clips, there are no reliable reports of American service members being held as prisoners in Iran. While the U.S. Confirmed the rescue of the two Air Force members involved in the April 3 incident, the claims of further captures appearing on social media have been debunked.
