Heavy rains and strong winds have caused widespread disruption in Mombasa and Kwale counties in Kenya, affecting at least 103 households in Mombasa County and displacing nine people across Jomvu, Kisauni, Changamwe, and Likoni sub-counties, according to a report by the Kenya Red Cross dated April 23, 2026.
In Mombasa, several homes in Freretown were damaged after strong winds blew off roofs, while flooding was reported in low-lying residential areas and flash floods disrupted movement in Nyali. Access to healthcare services was temporarily affected after floodwaters rendered Jomvu Model Hospital and Tudor Sub-County Health Facility inaccessible.
In neighbouring Kwale County, five households were affected in the Lungalunga and Vanga areas. Search efforts are ongoing for a boda boda rider who was swept away while attempting to cross a flooded bridge near Shimba Hills, with rescue teams deployed by the Kenya Red Cross to the area.
The incidents follow a heavy rainfall advisory issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department, which warned of intensified rainfall across coastal counties between April 22 and April 27, 2026, with the likelihood of flooding in low-lying and vulnerable areas. The department also cautioned that rains may be accompanied by gusty winds exceeding 25 knots and sea waves reaching heights of more than two metres along the Coast.
