[국제]”The fur gift I received from Saudi Arabia during Trump’s presidency was fake”

Gifts that former US President Donald Trump received from Saudi Arabia during his presidency have been found to be fake.

The New York Times (NYT) reported on the 11th that this fact was revealed while the Trump administration was tracking the management of gifts handed out by foreign governments to key Americans.

The gifts in question were three pieces of clothing made of white tiger and cheetah fur and an ivory-handled dagger.
These gifts were received during a visit to the Saudi royal family in May 2017.

Saudi Arabia, which has been in tension with the Obama administration, prepared more than 80 gifts when President Trump chose the country as his first overseas visit since taking office.

According to federal regulations, President Trump was required to report gifts received from foreign governments to authorities, but after hiding them for over three years, it was not until the last day of his presidency that he turned over these items to the wrong office, not the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

White House lawyers determined that the Saudi royal gift likely violated endangered species laws, but Tyler Cherry, a spokeswoman for the Department of the Interior, which oversees the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, said: The lining imitates tiger and cheetah patterns,” he said.

The handle of the dagger made of ivory was also revealed to be a material mixed with animal bones.
A Saudi embassy official in Washington declined to comment.

There are other reports of officials in the Trump administration violating rules regarding foreign gifts.
The New York Times reported that former White House national security adviser John Bolton received gold coins and ceramic bowls as gifts from Vietnam, but the whereabouts of the gifts are unknown, and former Vice President Mike Pence’s wife Karen Pence paid for the business card holder after receiving the gift. pointed out that he did not

The U.S. federal government requires that any gift received from a foreign country of more than a certain amount must be turned over to a government agency, and the Treasury must pay the equivalent to own it.
