Ukrainian grain exports imminent… Will it be a ‘short rain’ in the world food crisis?

Ukraine’s grain exports, which have been halted since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, are expected to resume soon.

It is clear that the global food crisis will be a big hit, but first of all, there is a limit to the grain processing capacity, and the uncertain war situation is also expected to be a constraint.

JCC, a joint coordination center to manage Ukraine’s grain exports via the Black Sea, has opened in Istanbul, Turkey.

JCC will be responsible for ensuring that grains shipped from three designated ports in Ukraine are safely exported to the Black Sea route, and inspecting ships entering Ukraine for weapons.

Soldiers and civilians dispatched by Ukraine and Russia, the United Nations and Turkey, etc. work jointly.

Grain exports are expected to resume at three designated ports, including Odessa, Ukraine, within a few days as early as possible.

If Ukraine, the world’s 3rd or 4th largest grain exporter, resumes exports, it is expected to become a major cost to the food crisis.

The Turkish Ministry of Defense predicted that 50 million tons would be released to the world market by the end of the year if Ukraine’s exports of 25 million tons and Russia are included.

However, the three designated ports, including Odessa, have an arithmetic grain processing capacity of 17 million tons.

There are also concerns that it will be difficult to trust Russia, which attacked Ukrainian ports even during the JCC agreement.

A mine installed in the Black Sea is also a time bomb.

Further conflicts may arise from Western sanctions against Russia.

The agreement will allow exports of Russian grain and fertilizers, but it is unclear whether it will avoid complex and widespread sanctions.
