Yes, at 2:00 pm today, the Seoul Central District Court sentenced former lawmaker Kwak Sang-do, who was transferred to trial, on charges of helping the Daejang-dong development project and receiving 5 billion won in his son’s name. severance pay.

Man-bae Kim, the main shareholder of Hwacheon Daeyu, who is suspected of embezzling company funds and giving bribes, and the lawyer Nam-wook, who is accused of giving illegal political money, also get were sentenced in the first instance.

This is the first time a legal ruling has come out since the corruption investigation into the Daejang-dong development began in September last year.

The biggest issue is whether the son of former Congressman Kwak can see the huge amount of money he received in the name of severance pay as a bribe.

Mr. Kwak Mo, the son of former legislator Kwak, who had joined Hwacheon Daeyu and previously worked, submitted a letter of resignation in February 2021 and signed a change performance bonus payment contract with a performance bonus of 5 billion won at the end of a month March. and he received the money.

Prosecutors consider the remaining 2.5 billion won in bribes, excluding 120 million won in actual severance pay and 2.3 billion won in income tax and employment insurance.

Former Congressman Kwak is said to have helped Hwacheon Daeyu, which participated in the Daejang-dong development project in 2015, form a consortium with Hana Bank and received money in return.

Kwak is also accused of receiving 50 million won in illegal political money from lawyer Nam Wook around the time of the 2016 general election.

Former Congressman Kwak has stubbornly denied the allegations.

He did not know about the bonuses and severance pay his son received, and said he never helped in the daejangdong business or asked for money.

However, the prosecution asked the court to sentence him to a heavy sentence, saying that 2.5 billion won was an unprecedented amount for the crime of bribing a current lawmaker.

Former Congressman Kwak was sentenced to 15 years in prison and won a fine of 5 billion, and Mr. Kim was sentenced to 5 years in prison.
