(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Ji-yeon = Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky gave a positive evaluation of the fifth peace negotiations with Russia, but said he would not slow down tensions.

According to the AFP news agency, President Zelensky said in a video speech announced after the fifth round of negotiations on the 29th (local time), “The signal from the negotiations can be said to be positive. There is no earthquake,” he said.

“There is no reason to trust the words of a delegation from a country that continues to fight to destroy us,” he said.

Regarding the announcement of Russia’s reduction of military activity, it claimed that “the enemy withdrew due to the courage and effective action of the Ukrainian forces”.

“It is still very likely that the Russian military will continue to attack Ukraine,” he said.

He also reiterated that sanctions imposed on Russia should continue until the end of the war.

“We must not think that the peace negotiations will affect the lifting of sanctions in Russia,” Zelensky said. At the same time, he added that the level of sanctions should be strengthened.

On the other hand, he also expressed his will to continue peace negotiations with Russia.

President Zelensky reaffirmed that Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be guaranteed, saying “Ukraine supports the talks (with Russia) and will continue the negotiation process to the extent necessary.”

It is evaluated that progress has been made in the 5th peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, which took place for about four hours in Istanbul, Turkey earlier on this day.

Ukraine has proposed that it can accept the neutralization that Russia has been demanding if its security is guaranteed, and Russia evaluated that “the negotiations proceeded constructively.”

Immediately after the talks, the Russian military announced that it would significantly reduce military activities in the Ukraine capital Kiiu and northeastern Chernivu in order to “strengthen trust”.

Russian President Vladimir Medinsky, the head of the Russian side, said that a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelensky would be possible as soon as a treaty between the two countries is ready.
