President Moon Jae-in is visiting three European countries to attend the G20 summit this week.

A meeting with Pope Francis is also planned.

However, attention is paid to whether progress will be made in the promotion of the Pope’s visit to North Korea, which is at a standstill as the Minister of Unification, not the main ministry, is scheduled to accompany the Pope to the meeting schedule.

President Moon Jae-in will depart for Italy on the 28th to attend the G20 summit and the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties summit.

The first of the 7 nights and 9 days European tour was a meeting with Pope Francis.

This is the first reunion in three years since my last visit to the Holy See in October 2018.

The reason President Moon’s meeting with the Pope is particularly interesting is the will of Pope Francis to visit North Korea.

Pope Francis said three years ago when President Moon announced his intention to invite North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, he said he would accept the official invitation if it came.

However, as inter-Korean relations deteriorated, the Pope’s visit to North Korea stopped without progress.

Pope Francis, however, reaffirmed his will to visit North Korea whenever he has the opportunity.

A key official at the Blue House also suggested that the Pope’s visit to North Korea will be discussed in depth during this meeting.

In particular, this statement is supported by the fact that Unification Minister Lee In-young, rather than the minister in charge, accompany the Pope to the meeting.

While efforts are being made to resume dialogue with North Korea through various channels, it is noteworthy whether the Pope’s visit to North Korea will emerge as another card.
