South Korea, the United States and Japan are accelerating trilateral security cooperation to jointly respond to North Korea’s nuclear provocation.

It is expected that concrete cooperation measures will be sought through a series of consultations this month, and it is noteworthy whether China’s backlash will act as a variable.

This is reporter Lee Kyo-jun’s report.

After North Korea fired a ballistic missile on the 25th of last month, the foreign ministers of South Korea, the United States, and Japan issued a joint statement three days later.

This is an unusually strong condemnation of North Korea’s provocations in the form of a joint statement without a separate meeting.

The strong will to respond jointly through close cooperation between the three countries can be read.

The government is accelerating the triangular cooperation between South Korea, the U.S. and Japan in the wake of North Korea’s successive provocations.

High-level discussions are expected to follow this month, starting with the summit between the two Koreas, the U.S. and Japan, to be held in Seoul on the 3rd.

When high-level talks between the United States and Japan are held, it is likely that the trilateral cooperation plan will be sought to deter North Korea’s nuclear provocation.

[김현욱 / 국립외교원 교수 : 향후 한미일 안보 협력의 첫 구체화 단계로서 확장 억지에 대한 협의체 모색이 가능하지 않을까 하는 생각이 듭니다.]

The Chinese government is wary of the US-led anti-China solidarity and is paying close attention to the close moves of South Korea, the US and Japan.

The conflict between Korea and Japan over the past history and territorial sovereignty over Dokdo, along with China’s backlash, still remains a factor in strengthening security cooperation between Korea, the United States and Japan.
