Thousands of Australians who lost retirement savings in the 2024 collapse of the Shield Master Fund and First Guardian Master Fund face a strict March 31, 2026 deadline to lodge compensation claims, according to reports from Yahoo Finance and The Australian. Roughly 11,000 investors lost an estimated $1.1 billion when the managed investment schemes were shut down and seized by liquidators. While the Australian Securities and Investments Commission indicates that about 5,800 people invested in Shield and 6,000 in First Guardian, many affected individuals remain unaware their superannuation was funneled into the failed schemes.

The Australian Financial Complaints Authority is currently processing thousands of complaints related to the collapse, but time is running out. According to Yahoo Finance, Australians can only lodge a complaint against a business that maintains active membership with AFCA, which typically expires one to two years after a company shuts down. That administrative reality creates a hard cutoff at 5 p.m. on March 31, 2026. Successful claimants through AFCA are generally entitled to recover up to $150,000.

“There are hard deadlines, and once they pass, people may miss out on compensation,” Super Consumers Australia Chief Executive Officer Xavier O’Halloran told NewsWire, as reported by Yahoo Finance.

Data provided by AFCA to NewsWire shows that as of February 10, the authority had received 843 complaints regarding the Shield Master Fund and 1,319 complaints concerning First Guardian, with 167 individuals lodging claims for both funds. While about 2,100 total complaints have been logged, fewer than 1,000 distinct investors account for that total because some individuals filed multiple claims, leaving roughly 9,000 affected savers yet to take action.

Regulatory Investigations and Support for Victims

AFCA Chief Ombudsman and Chief Executive Officer David Locke stated that the complaints surrounding the First Guardian and Shield collapse represent a core priority for the organization this year. In an update reported by Yahoo Finance, Locke noted that the authority has issued 44 decisions, including five lead decisions, alongside 500 simultaneous investigations.

To assist impacted savers, ASIC announced in early February that it is deploying nearly 50 personnel across 26 separate investigations, which the corporate regulator describes as among the largest and most complex in its history. As part of this enforcement and support response, ASIC has directed consumers to takeyoursuperback, an independent website funded by the regulator and developed by Super Consumers Australia to help victims navigate the claims process. Investors looking to file are advised to compile records detailing the name of the company, the specific reasons for the financial loss, and the total dollar amount lost before submitting claims to AFCA.
